It was another historic day for the North Texas Blind Soccer Association as we held the first-ever 5-A-Side Blind Soccer Tournament in the United States over Memorial Day Weekend 2023 in Carrollton, TX.
The NTBSA Kickaround Open tournament was a two-day, six-game format that involved the Ohio Blind Soccer team from Columbus, OH, Metro Blaze SC from Fort Worth, TX, Shockwave SC from Celina, TX, and additional players from around the country who did not have their own team.
The teams included players ranging from those who have been playing for about a year to active roster players from the Men’s Blind Soccer National Team, and some hopeful prospects for the team when they take the international stage at the 2028 Paralympics in Los Angeles.
The tournament was a huge success that saw great soccer action including the thrilling last game between Ohio Blind Soccer and Metro Blaze SC that went to penalty kicks for the championship at the end of regulation with a score of 0-0. Ohio Blind Soccer ultimately prevailed taking the championship with the only goal scored in kicks, a screamer that barely made its way over the goalkeeper's right shoulder.
After a year of planning and organization, we could not have hoped for a better turnout and result. We loved seeing the joy among the players getting out and competing in a sport that they have spent years practicing to get to the highest level.
